FER - Fairyland Export Recordings - philosophy

Why another weblabel ... ?

... no, not another one... FER has been around for a long time ... Philipp (Avalon Purity / DRXS / DSOF Prod HC / Drumlands) and later on Jens (PitzA/Drumlands) have been making music unter the Headline "Fairyland Export Recordings" for a good bit of time. In 2004 www.fairyland-music.com went online. Since then, music has been released on the site. With that, we are not the first, but at least one of the older web labels, even though we have never viewed ourselves as one.
In 2008, the fourth version of the site went online. Since the project had lost some of its power, we took the opportunity for some changes. Since august 2008 we are officially a weblabel and our music is released under CC-license.

Fairyland Sound...?

What Fairland sound is? Not long ago, Mary of brainfuckingbeatz.de, a German radio station was asked what kind of music Avalon Purity does. Her answer: "Well... it's just Techno." Nowadays a rather unusual description out of the mouth of a Techno professional. For most acts, there is a more fitting description, like Electro, Minimal, Hardtechno etc. Fairyland is Avalon Purity's project. For that very reason, Fairyland will be standing for "just Techno", as well, "Pure Techno" if you will.
What does that mean?
In In the near past, the scene has mainly been nouriging on Hardtechno and Minimal . Hard music is great, but hardness looses its force without softer elements in contrast to it. Minimal, too, has once been interesting, but since anybody can easily sequence some breaking wood sticks from some preset sample database on his laptop, minimal has lost much of is innovation. There was a time, when Techno would make the hair on the arms of its fans stand up. That is where we want to get back to again. Of course there is no use in copiing the past, that would be as good or bad as copiing new ideas. But many good ideas have been thrown overboard in the last years.
Isn't the fascinating thing about Techno, that it is a type of party music which leaves room for some certain subtility? There has never been an obligation to provide vocals, which luckily has spared us some embarassing and stupid messages, but if there really is something to say, there is room for vocals, still. As well, there are no emotional borders, from one machine-like coldness, one can shift into phantastic worlds in an instant. Melancholy, fear, euphoria, aggression, madness, mental emptyness, and intelligence lie side by side. In one hour, an entire universe can be crossed.
To use these possibilities is the thought behind FER. Back to the synthesizers, away from preset samples. Pushing, synthetic rythems, combined with forcefull basslines and sounds that will couse the mind to float. Even some thoughtful lyrics will be found in our future releases.
Especially astonishing about Techno has been the discovery, that the image generated in the listeners mind, depend far lesson the actual melody of a piece of music, but rather on the sound itself. The very same melody or just a single tone will lead to completely different impressions when played with various instruments. If the possibility to combine notes and chords is limited within the 12-tone-scale, the possibilities of variations in sound are not. Still, Techno is the music, least limited in view of sound esthetics, even if the many productions using presets may suggest something different. According to this, FER Productions often deal with the Sounds, themselves, wich are individually programmed for each track. It will probebly demand some extend of Techno-enthusiasm, to appreciate this.

The name...?

"Fairyland Export Recordings"... what the... The name derives from one of Philipp's (Avalon Purity / DRXS) ideas. Fairyland can mean a land of fairies, but as well land of fairytales or even something like wonderland. The rest is explained by the above, by the idea to send the listener on a journey by use of audio textures. Electronic sounds are something unrealistc, something, that is usually not found in our natural environment. Following that, our records are music from some type of Wonderland, realm of fairytales, phantasy-, or fairyland. Export? Because all this has to be imported to reality first (lol), thus an export product from fairyland.

The logo...

Since site version 2.0 of 2004, Fairyland has the FER-Circle for official logo. The actual meaning of the symbol has been lost during the history of Fairyland. Archeologists dispute about its origin.Different interpretations have been proposed: The Circle itself is already a mystically loaded symbol, symbolising the circle of life. But the FER-Circle also strongly resembles a sun symbol. Equally well, it could be understood as a gate...but leading where? ... Also a frame around a mystery similar to a laurel wreath is opined.
